Leaning over the railings atop the newly constructed view deck, residents take in a familiar park transformed by millions of shimmering, multi-colored lights. Christmas music spills from surrounding speakers as the dancing fountain draws crowds into a shared moment of pause and wonder. The holiday glow in San Nicolas shines as a moment of reflection, anticipation, and hope as the town steps into a new year.

Beyond the lights and festivities, the changes are tangible. New multi-purpose buildings, barangay halls, child development centers, and well-lit, well-paved roads are beginning to reshape daily life, not as grand monuments, but as open spaces where residents come together, travel, children learn, and local services finally have room to grow. As the town prepares to welcome the new year, these developments stand as more than completed projects. They reflect a long-term vision anchored in accessibility, community, and the belief that progress does not have to be loud to be lasting.

“Kumpara idi ado ti nagbaliwan nan atoy ili mi ayan ti naduma-duma nga sektor, pero iti pinaka kayat ko ay sa health opportunities, especially for elders, and educational assistance in all levels,” shared Normina, 24, a resident of Barangay San Felipe East.

Micah, 24, another resident from the barangay, also stated: “It feels safer than before. Pinagtutuunan talaga nila ang safety ng community.”

More than the changes in infrastructure and projects, progress is also measured by quiet transformations and personal realizations.

“Natutunan kong mas pahalagahan ang mga simpleng pangyayari sa aking kapaligiran na nakapagbibigay sa akin ng saya at katahimikan ng isip,” said Normina. In a time filled with overwhelming current affairs and disturbing everyday news, this renewed sense of appreciation for small, mundane moments in daily life has become its own kind of progress and growth.

As this year begins, residents also express their desire for practical changes rather than dramatic shifts. They spoke of their hopes to strengthen existing programs and ensure continuity of projects that nurture the community.

“Inaasahan kong makita ang patuloy na mapabuti ang serbisyong publiko, mga programang sumusuporta sa edukasyon, kalusugan, pag-unlad ng kabataan, at kapakanan ng komunidad,” said Normina, expressing her appreciation for the rippling transformation felt through even the smallest of changes.

When asked what kind of town they wish to wake up to in the New Year, residents spoke of their shared vision for a town that is a home: safe, clean, and peaceful, where no one has to leave because opportunities are within reach, a place that awakens their sense of pride.

“Sana mas dumami ang oportunidad dito,” Micah said. “Yung hindi na kailangang lumuwas pa para lang makahanap ng trabaho.” Others echoed the need for sustainable livelihood programs, realizing that while financial aid provides relief, skills and employment provide independence in the long run, especially for budding professionals like Micah and Normina.

“Isang bayang maipagmamalaki,” Normina simply stated. “San Nicolas bilang tahanan.”

As the fireworks echo and paint the sky, signaling the arrival of 2026 with a bang, they reflect a gentler promise: that while San Nicolas cannot ensure smooth sailing ahead, there is much to be thankful for and even more to expect. Foundations have been set for the residents of the town: steadier programs for education, aid for those in need, investments in safety and opportunity. Progress has been set in motion, and it continues in the right direction.

In the coming year, San Nicolanians share a hope to continue waking up in the gentle embrace of a peaceful, secure town where everybody looks out for one another, a town they are proud to call tahanan.
