As technology has become increasingly ingrained into our personal interactions, we have seen that we are gradually forgetting fundamental decency when communicating with others.
A simple scrolling on the Internet will lead you to social media sites and gaming communities saturated with foul languages and overt hate speech.
We have become tied to our gadgets and have gradually become digital citizens who are now so dependent with the digital world. However, have we also realized how to be digitally literate? Do we possess the qualification of โdigital citizenshipโ?
Let us brush up on our understanding on netiquette and its core rules from Virginia Sheaโs book โThe Core Rules of Netiquette.โ
Netiquette, a coined term from the words โInternetโ and โetiquetteโ, is a set of rules for behaving properly online, and here are the ten core rules of netiquette:
Rule 1: Remember the Human
โYou need to be careful on what you are posting or commenting on any of social media platforms because you don’t know someone might it take seriously or personally and causes harm to them. The Internet is a place where people can also have feelings, so be careful.
Rule 2: Adhere to the same standard of behavior online that you follow in real life
โJust like you don’t do disrespectful things in person, you shouldn’t do it online. Treat other people with the same kindness you’re doing in real life situations.
Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace
โWe all have our own culture and traditions so be aware of the different social media platforms or communities you participate in.
Rule 4: Respect other people’s time and bandwidth
โDon’t chat or message someone with irrelevant messages, especially when they’re in their free time. Consider how your online actions impact other people.
Rule 5: Make yourself look good online
โBe professional and positive online. Avoid sharing unnecessary things and think on how you interact with other people.
Rule 6: Share expert knowledge
โIf you have knowledge about something, freely share it. This might help them gain some knowledge and lessons.
Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control
โAvoid participating in arguments that escalate to personal attacks. Try to avoid conflict and disrespectful communities.
Rule 8: Respect other people’s privacy
โBe mindful of what you post and how it might affect other people’s privacy, like photos or conversations. Don’t share personal information without their permission.
Rule 9: Don’t abuse your power
โIf you have large or many followers online, use your power responsibly. Don’t bully, manipulate or harm others.
Rule 10: Be forgiving of other people’s mistake
โMany people don’t have that much knowledge about online platforms and many of them still makes mistakes, so be considerate and be understanding of other people’s mistake instead of being judgmental.
โThese ten rules emphasize the importance of treating online interactions with the same kindness and respect we show in our personal lives. In short, navigating the digital world requires mindful consideration of other peopleโs well-being.
