On August 14-15, 2024, the local government of San Nicolas had the privilege of hosting a significant training event focused on Basic Sign Language and Skills Demonstration on Assistive Devices. This two-day training brought together an inspiring group of 95 participants, including Community Development Workers (CDWs), Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and their devoted guardians, all eager to enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting our community members with special needs.

Our esteemed speakers, 𝙅𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙞𝙖, head of the Persons with Disability Affairs Office, and 𝙋𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙖 𝘾𝙪𝙚𝙩𝙤, senior manpower development officer, guided the sessions with expertise and compassion. They covered a range of vital topics, including the dynamics of interacting with deaf individuals, basic communication principles, and hands-on demonstrations of various assistive devices that can significantly improve the quality of life of PWDs.

The event was graced by the presence of Mayor Alice and several municipal councilors, including Amorsolo Pulido, Pedrelito Bibat, Jun Serquiña, and Jairus Dulay, as well as MSWDO Delia Dalutag and Municipal PDAO Coordinator Nerissa Gallardo.

The Mayor opened the training with heartfelt acknowledgments and greetings, expressing her gratitude to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for organizing such a crucial and relevant initiative.

In her address, Mayor Alice shared her unique perspective as a healthcare professional—drawing from her experiences as a doctor, nurse, and pharmacist. She highlighted the importance of understanding the topics discussed, particularly in relation to her public service work, where she often interacts with PWDs during medical visits and the delivery of assistive devices.

One of the key points of her speech was the necessity of education for those who engage with PWDs and those who are sick. She emphasized that equipping caregivers and community members with the right knowledge and skills is essential for the proper use of assistive devices and for providing compassionate care.

Moreover, the Mayor passionately encouraged participants to share the valuable insights they gained during the training with others in the community. She firmly believes that disseminating this knowledge will ultimately benefit our beloved town of San Nicolas and foster a more inclusive environment for all.

To conclude the training, participants engaged in an evaluation session, providing feedback on their experiences, followed by a ceremonial awarding of certificates to recognize their commitment to learning and growth.
