Select members of DRRM frontliners from various barangays are currently undergoing an intensive learning experience designed to give emergency responders in the barangays of San Nicolas a solid working knowledge on water safety, survival, and basic skills on rescue.

Started on Monday, April 24, the 7-day 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 covers the fundamentals of water safety and survival tactics when faced with water emergency. The program particularly dwells more on lessons and techniques to surviving on any bodies of water, which could make the difference between life and death situation. The knowledge and skills learned in this training are suited to address common water emergency situations especially during disasters such as typhoons and flashfloods.

Conducted in partnership with 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐃𝐑𝐑𝐌𝐎 and 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, an advocacy organization promoting water safety and survivalism, the training is preparatory to the launching of the “𝐄𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐰” program aimed at making 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

The opening ceremonies of the activity was graced by 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐃𝐑𝐑𝐌𝐂 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐋. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐬-𝐄𝐧𝐫𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐳. She is joined by DRRM Officer 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐦 𝐆𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠; DRRM advocate, Typhoon Yolanda survivor and urban planner 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐬; Survivalist Philippines’ secretary 𝐄𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐳, who is an active collaborator of Safe Kids-Philippines and currently Master Teacher and DRRM official at Commonwealth Elementary School; and Trainers 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐜 and 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚ñ𝐚 from the Emergency Medical Service of Pangasinan PDRRMO.

PAFR TSgt 𝐍𝐨𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐬, president of Survivalist Philippines and Philippine Coast Guard-certified rescue trainer, serves as the head trainer of the intense and challenging program tailored to capacitate the participants with the tactics and techniques on water safety, survival and rescue basics that they can download to their respective constituents. He used to be a part of the PAFR Rescue Group based in Boracay Island and served as Search and Rescue (SAR) Supervisor of Pangasinan PDRRMO under the command of Ret. Col. Rhodyn Luchinvar Oro.

“We are now facing more disasters than wars, and most of these disasters are water-related emergencies due to increased intensity of storm surges and flooding due to global sea level rise. Not to mention the day-to-day water-related emergencies we are facing because of the presence of so many water bodies in our midst that act as magnet to people from all walks of life. Therefore, we need to build an army of Water Survival Champions to prepare our communities to hurdle this emerging challenge of our time,” he noted.
