In celebration of Rabies Awareness Month, the local government unit of San Nicolas in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), renew their commitment to end the rabies disease through a campaign to increase awareness about rabies prevention.

Dubbed as “Makiisa sa barangayan kontra rabies, maging responsableng pet owner”, this flagship program initiated by Mayor Alice is a yearly campaign of the local government to ensure a “Rabies-Free San Nicolas”.

As of this week alone, the total vaccinated pets reached 859 in just four (4) barangays with the following breakdown:

January 18, 2022 (San Roque: 309 dogs and 49 cats)

January 19, 2022 (Sobol: 94 dogs and 29 cats)

January 20, 2022 (San Felipe East: 140 dogs and 43 cats)

January 21, 2022 (San Felipe West: 147 dogs and 48 cats)

Moreover, Mayor Alice said a total of 459 pet owners had been served, which is a collaborative effort of LGU San Nicolas, the Department of Agriculture (DA), and the Department of Health (DOH).

“I am indeed happy because in the first four days of our anti-rabies campaign, almost a thousand dogs and cats were vaccinated. This means that our residents are very open to vaccinating their pets,” Mayor Alice shared.

“And that is because of the dedication and commitment of our Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) personnel headed by Mr. Adonis Bañaga. Hindi nila alintana ang init ng araw makapagbakuna lamang ating mga alagang aso at pusa. Maraming salamat po sa inyong walang-katumbas na serbisyo,” she added.

Rabies is a vaccine preventable viral disease, yet more than 59,000 people die from this disease annually. In the Philippines, it is considered a public health problem as it is one of the most acutely fatal infection, responsible for the deaths of at least 200 Filipinos each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 99% of all rabies transmissions are from dogs.

“Prevention is key in eliminating the Rabies disease. 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans are from dogs. Be a responsible pet owner and vaccinate your pets. This is the most cost-effective strategy to prevent rabies in our community,” Mayor Alice stated.

Next week, five more barangays are slated to be served by the program. These are: Malilion (January 24), Cabuloan (January 25), Camangaan (January 26), Sto. Tomas (January 27), and Camindoroan (January 28).
